Chapter 24

After Joyce pays the bill, I watch as the detectives walk out of the restaurant and get into the Charger, leaving Bob engaged in a heated phone conversation with one of his subcontractors.

“Nice job in there, Hank,” Joyce says.

Hank puts the car in reverse and pulls out of the parking space. Joyce watches the people filing in and out of the restaurant.

“He made it easy. What a douchebag.”

Hank pulls out onto the street. After a minute of silence, he says, “I’m not like him, am I? You don’t see me that way, do you?”

Joyce looks away from the window. “What do you mean?”

Hank gives her a knowing look.

Joyce shakes her head. “Not unless the woman you cheated with was in a committed relationship as well.” Joyce looks away from him. “Was she?”

Hank shakes his head.

Joyce looks at him, then back out the window. “Has it happened again?”

Hank looks at her. “Never.”

Joyce points out the window. “Pull over. Right there along the curb.”

Hank gives her a quizzical look but follows her command and eases the car over. When the vehicle stops, Joyce watches him and then looks out at the park.

“Do you know what park this is?”

“Freeman?”

Joyce nods, still looking out the window, her mind somewhere else. “Do you know anything about the history? What this park was before?”

Hank frowns and shakes his head.

“It was a landfill. A garbage dump.”

I can tell Hank has the same thought as me. How? Not a trace of trash can be seen anywhere among the beautiful trees and grass.

“It’s beautiful, right?”

“Yes,” Hank agrees.

“Seeing it now, nobody would ever guess there’re thousands of tons of garbage below us.” Now she turns and looks Hank in the eye. “My own trash is buried here. Probably tons of it. What do you think people would say if I grabbed a shovel and started digging for it?”

Hank smiles. “It’d confirm what people say about you.”

She rolls her eyes. “Hank, just like my trash, your mistake is better left buried. There’s no good that comes from bringing it up. Leave it where it is and move on. Forgive yourself.” She pauses and stares into his eyes until she’s sure he’s heard her. “No, you’re nothing like Bob Love. The fact that you asked proves it. You made a mistake, confessed, and haven’t done it since. That’s completely different from ole Bobby there.” She sighs. “Okay?”

Hank swallows and nods.

Joyce winks and looks away from him. “The question is…what to do about it?”

Hank looks at the large pine tree towering above them. “James?”

Joyce nods. “Do you think he knew?”

Hank pulls away from the curb and pulls back onto the road. After several seconds, he shakes his head. “I don’t think so. We could ask him?”

Joyce closes her eyes and rubs her forehead. “We could, but then we’re telling a married man about an affair his wife had while she lays in bed dying.” She sighs. “I don’t know about you, but I’d just as soon avoid it if we could.”

“You know the danger there.
